OpenAI’s Legal team plays an indispensable role in advancing OpenAI's mission by navigating futuristic, foundational legal issues in AI. This is the team for you if you care deeply about doing meaningful and novel work as a technology lawyer. The team is composed of various backgrounds, including technology, regulatory, M&A, employment, and contract law.

About the role

We seek a Sr. Counsel to lead our legal team supporting Global Affairs in navigating complex new regulations applicable to AI. This role will coordinate our legal efforts globally in developing positions on proposed AI legislation, and work closely with other legal and business teams in ensuring compliance with new AI regulations. You'll report to one of OpenAI's Deputy General Counsel and work closely with our Legal, Global Affairs, and Product teams and external counsel.

This role is remote eligible but based in Seattle, WA.

In this role, you will:

  • Analyze laws and regulations concerning AI to understand their impact on OpenAI and the broader AI community.

  • Develop policy positions on pending legislation and international standards.

  • Provide legal analysis and advice to the Global Affairs team and other internal stakeholders.

  • Contribute to our ongoing improvements to AI governance as regulations come into force.

  • Monitor and keep the team updated on emerging legislative and regulatory developments related to AI.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 12+ years of legal experience.

  • Strong leadership and ability to influence.

  • Combination of an in-house company, government/institution, or law firm experience.

  • Strong background in technology laws.

  • Experience and familiarity with AI or a demonstrated interest in AI laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge and experience with intellectual property laws.

  • Create clear and concise writing, distilling complex concepts into simple, explainable, and persuasive ideas

  • Experience analyzing complex legislation.

  • Experience engaging with regulators and/or policymakers.
