Software Engineering Manager

Location: 100% remote worldwide or onsite-hybrid in Berlin, Germany

Classification: Full-time, 32-40 hours a week

Pay Range: 80,000€ - 200,000€/year

As we continue to scale and grow our development organization, we are looking for a Software Engineering Manager with a strong technical background to lead 1-2 teams of engineers. The exact teams will be set based on your experience, expertise, and interest in an open discussion with us.

Role Overview

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will manage and grow a team of engineers delivering reliable, high-quality software in close collaboration with product managers, designers, cross-functional peers, and leadership. You’ll help shape the technical and team strategy, provide hands-on mentorship, and ensure strong execution in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. This role is perfect for a staff-level or senior engineer with exceptional people skills ready to become an engineering manager, or a current engineering manager with a strong foundation in clean code and clean architecture. Along with occasional hands-on coding, you will be expected to provide strong code reviews, technical guidance, and make critical architecture decisions.

Responsibilities

• Support a growing team by stepping in to code as required

• Manage, support, and grow 1-2 teams of engineers (8-12 engineers)

• Collaborate with product, design, and other engineering leaders to define team goals and priorities that align with company initiatives

• Review technical designs and contribute to architecture decisions to ensure scalable and maintainable systems, considering short and long-term trade-offs

• Foster a healthy, inclusive, and high-performing team culture based on trust, psychological safety, and continuous improvement

• Mentor engineers in areas such as clean architecture, domain modeling, design patterns, testing, and overall engineering best practices

• Facilitate team rituals such as sprint planning, retrospectives, and 1:1s

Hiring Process

• Initial application

  • You’ll be asked to answer a few qualifying questions, as well as upload your CV.

• 15-minute tech screening call

  • A quick video call to confirm your technical knowledge. You’ll be asked 7 short questions related to algorithms, programming, and databases.

• Behavioural interview (1 hour)

  • Meet with a member of our HR team to discuss your experience and share with them how you approached various situations in your career so far.

• Code review interview (1 hour)

  • Meet with a member of the current Development team to perform some code review activities together.

• Project management/leadership interview (1 hour)

  • Meet with a member of the project management team to discuss how you approach collaboration with different departments and more!

• Engineering Manager chat & system design interview (1.5 hours)

  • Meet with a current Miaplaza Engineering Manager, or our Head of Engineering, to learn more about the role, as well as go through a system design activity together.

• Executive leadership interview (1 hour)

  • Meet with a member of our executive leadership team to discuss the role, how you approach leadership, and business needs.

• Reference check

  • We’ll ask for 3 references, at least one being a former or current manager. And if you have former or current direct reports, we’d like to speak with one of them, as well!

• Offer & background check

  • We’ll present you with an offer, and once it’s signed, you’ll undergo a background check ahead of your first day!

Compensation

The expected starting salary range is 80,000€ - 200,000€/year. Our top-of-market competitive compensation is based on market data, regional cost of living, employment type, background, skills, experience, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications

• 4+ years of professional software development experience

• 1-2 years in a technical leadership or people management role

• 4+ years of experience with C#/.NET (or similar object-oriented languages)

• 4+ years of experience with Vue3 or similar modern reactive frameworks (React, Angular, etc)

• 4+ years of experience with SQL (we use Postgres) or similar database technologies

• Strong understanding of clean architecture, domain-driven design, and testable code

• Strong experience mentoring engineers

• Experience with migration patterns

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Comfortable working remotely with distributed teams across time zones

• Be a proactive and driven self-starter

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience managing teams, building external-facing products serving users at scale

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure

• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps workflows

• Experience with application security or DevSecOps

• Passion for education, learning platforms, and student-centered technology
