The Work

As Manager of the Embedded Setup team, you’ll lead Check’s efforts to transition from delivering setup as a service to enabling partners to own it themselves. You will manage the team responsible for onboarding new employers through Check’s partners—balancing high-quality, timely service delivery today with building a training-first, partner-enablement model for tomorrow. You’ll define and execute strategy for partner enablement, oversee day-to-day setup operations, and collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Partner Success to improve processes and reduce manual work through tooling and automation.

This is a critical leadership role at Check that ensures partners can scale efficiently, delive company growth.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the Embedded Setup team responsible for delivering employer setups via Check’s partners, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and exceptional service.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to develop and execute the transition strategy from Check-run setups to partner-owned implementations, with a strong focus on training and enablement.

  • Design and deliver scalable partner training programs, including live sessions, asynchronous resources, shadowing frameworks, and QA support.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to improve setup tooling and automation (e.g., Flatfile integrations, External Payroll API, Console workflows).

  • Define and maintain high-quality SOPs, playbooks, training guides, and repeatable migration templates.

  • Build strong relationships with partners, understanding their needs and tailoring enablement plans accordingly.

  • Analyze team performance and partner outcomes to identify opportunities for operational efficiency and continuous improvement.

  • Support hiring, onboarding, and development of Setup team members, fostering a culture of excellence, adaptability, and partner-centricity.

  • Act as a strategic voice in planning discussions to ensure Embedded Setup aligns with Check’s overall growth and product roadmap.

Tools for the Job Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have most or all of the following:

  • 5+ years of experience in implementation, operations, or related fields, with at least 2+ years in a people-management or team-lead role. Experience in payroll implementation or operations strongly preferred.

  • Deep knowledge of payroll complexity, including multi-EIN configurations, benefit taxability, retroactive pay, and data imports.

  • Experience building and delivering effective training and enablement programs to external partners or customers.

  • Strategic mindset, with the ability to define and execute a vision while managing day-to-day operations.

  • Technically fluency across a wide range of operational tools, and comfort learning and teaching new technologies like APIs, Flatfile, and native tooling.

  • Partner-first mindset, knowing when to support directly and when to empower others to succeed.

  • Excel at creating clear, high-quality documentation (SOPs, playbooks, training guides) that can scale.

  • Thrive in highly cross-functional environments and can partner effectively with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success.

  • Communicate clearly and persuasively, adapting your style to both internal teams and external partners.

Travel and Office Policy:  We build best when we come together on level ground. The Check team is distributed across the US, and we have offices in New York City and San Francisco. While we embrace remote work, time together in person is where we do our best work. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons a couple of times a year! We expect all employees to attend our annual 3-day company retreat in the fall.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the team hosts regular happy hours, game nights, etc.

What we offer:

For full-time employees, Check offers company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term/long-term disability, and basic life insurance coverage, effective on their first day of work. We also provide stock options, flexible PTO and sick leave, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all new parents, flexible return-to-work, 9 annual holidays, a 401k retirement plan, and a $100 monthly stipend for home internet and mobile phone expenses.

The actual annual salary for this role depends on each candidate’s experience, qualifications, and work location. Most new hires are placed near the midpoint of this range to ensure fairness with our existing team’s compensation.

  • The expected range in San Francisco, NYC, LA, and Seattle is between $165,000 and $181,500.

  • The expected range for all other locations is between $140,500 and $154,550.
