Senior Staff Software Engineer
Senior Staff Software Engineer Voltron Data | US Remote
At Voltron Data, we’re building the future of composable data systems—fueled by open standards, next-gen hardware, and the Apache Arrow ecosystem. We’re looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to push the boundaries of data infrastructure and lead the development of high-performance, distributed, and scalable systems.
What You’ll Do
Design, build, and optimize core components of our Arrow-native query engine (Theseus), contributing to performance-critical data systems.
Drive architectural decisions across C++, Arrow, Substrait, and related open standards.
Collaborate with compiler, systems, and GPU engineers to accelerate workloads across heterogeneous compute environments (CPU, GPU, etc.).
Own end-to-end feature delivery—from research to design to implementation to optimization.
Lead RFCs and technical strategy in the open-source ecosystem (Arrow, Substrait, etc.), with a strong public footprint.
Mentor other ICs across teams; serve as a technical multiplier without needing to manage people.
What Sets You Apart
Proven track record as a senior IC working on modern compilers, databases, query engines, or similar systems.
Strong background in systems programming (C++, Rust, Go); bonus for GPU computing or LLVM knowledge.
Experience with Arrow, Parquet, Substrait, Velox, or similar ecosystems.
Familiarity with vectorized query execution, columnar formats, or memory management optimization.
Comfortable balancing bleeding-edge innovation with pragmatic engineering.
Nice to Have
Contributions to open-source projects (especially Apache Arrow, Substrait, etc.).
Experience in data interoperability standards and cross-language system design.
Prior work in startup or high-growth environments where speed and rigor coexist.
About Voltron Data We’re on a mission to unlock composability in the data ecosystem. Backed by top-tier investors and led by creators and contributors to Apache Arrow, we’re reimagining how data flows across tools, teams, and machines. If you’re obsessed with performance, elegant design, and pushing open standards forward—we want to talk.
