What Product Management is like at Gusto:
We’re looking for high-autonomy, entrepreneurial Product Managers to come build high-impact solutions for small businesses and their employees. We believe in high-ownership Product Managers who operate like business owners - owning an entire roadmap end to end and shipping product all the way from strategy through to the nitty gritty details (some describe this kind of role as a “GM” type role).
Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership.
We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners.
About the Team:
The Gusto HR Partners team pairs small businesses with seasoned HR professionals who provide expert advice, guidance, and hands-on support. We’re building the future of HR as a service—delivered through a hybrid model of people and technology. This team sits within Gusto’s broader HR Experiences organization, alongside peer PMs who are building the HR software that powers hiring, performance management, compliance, and more. Together, we’re crafting a cohesive, tech-enabled ecosystem that enables small businesses to thrive. Our cross-functional team includes operators, designers, engineers, and advisors—all united by a mission to bring powerful, human-centered HR to the millions of small businesses that need it.
As the first dedicated Product Manager on this team, you’ll lead the charge in building a next-generation, tech-enabled service model where AI and people work hand-in-hand. You'll ship fast, solve real user pain, and design systems that scale service delivery without sacrificing the human touch. This is a foundational role in our AI transformation—turning expert judgment into structured, repeatable, and automatable systems. If you're excited to build from scratch, move quickly, and create tools that empower operators while training the AI—you’ll thrive here.
Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
Ownership: Design and build internal tools, automation, and AI-powered workflows that capture HR Pro expertise and transform it into scalable, intelligent systems.
North Star: Ship a growing library of partner-facing tools and workflows that enable HR Pros to serve customers more efficiently—and generate the structured inputs we need to automate those tasks in our AI platform.
Collaborate: Partner cross-functionally with engineering, design, operations, and AI teams to build end-to-end solutions
Set a fast, iterative pace for experimentation—learning from the field and shipping improvements weekly
Define and measure success, ensuring the tools we build improve both the HR Partner and customer experience
Here’s what we're looking for:
5+ years of product management or equivalent experience in high-ownership environments
Proven track record of launching internal platforms or tech-enabled services that scale human expertise
Experience working closely with expert operators (e.g., consultants, advisors, or support teams)
Hands-on experience integrating AI-powered tools (e.g., LLMs, copilots, automation workflows)
Scrappy builder mindset—comfortable with ambiguity, biased toward action, and quick to prototype
Strong communicator and collaborator with a user-obsessed, service-oriented product approach
If you don't think you meet all of the criteria above but still are interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box, and we're looking for someone excited to join the team.
Our cash compensation amount for this role is $152,000/yr to $190,000/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $184,000/yr to $230,000/yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Where do PMs at Gusto work? We have offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York and have remote team members across the US and Canada. We are actively hiring for the following Centers of Gravity: Toronto, Canada, Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, and Seattle, WA. Our open roles will specify on the careers page and in the job description where the position is eligible for work.
