Why Mozilla?
Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, privacy, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people.
The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.
Mozilla is seeking a lawyer to join our Competition & Regulation team. This pivotal role involves managing a range of IP and competition matters, assisting with Mozilla’s work at global standards bodies, and managing litigation. You will join a small, multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled and experienced professionals whose scope spans Competition/Antitrust, IP, Regulation, and Litigation. Our aim is the fulfilment of Mozilla’s mission of an open and accessible internet for all through legal and regulatory advice/support to internal teams, and working with policymakers and regulators externally to advocate for greater choice and competition online. This role will report to the Director of Global Competition and Regulation.
What you’ll do:
Manage IP matters and advice, including software licensing matters (with a particular focus on open source software), and manage a small patent portfolio
Manage and help to run litigation, particularly in IP, competition, and regulatory matters, as well as managing Mozilla’s amicus briefs
Advise on Mozilla’s participation in standards bodies and participate directly in certain capacities
Advise on competition and competition regulation, working closely with the Public Policy team
Represent Mozilla in meetings with governments, legislators, enforcers, and regulators
Be a trusted advisor to Mozilla’s leadership, product, and technical teams
Collaborate closely with colleagues on the Legal & Policy teams on the intersection between IP, competition, privacy, and regulation
What you’ll bring:
J.D. degree and membership in a state bar with good standing
8+ years relevant experience, with in-house technology experience highly valued
Excellent IP knowledge and experience, with some competition experience and interest
Experience managing and working on litigation in the US
Ability to effectively prioritize and balance multiple tasks and responsibilities
Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to build internal alignment across subject matter experts to deliver multifaceted legal advice
Curiosity, knowledge, and insight about the technology sector, especially topics relating to open source, competition, and the impact of new technologies and regulations
Willingness to go deep with technical teams to give the best possible advice
Strong communication skills with the ability to advocate and persuade in writing and verbally
What you’ll get:
Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team
Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage
Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute)
Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together
Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday
One-time home office stipend
Annual professional development budget
Quarterly well-being stipend
Considerable paid parental leave
Employee referral bonus program
Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country)
