Thunderbird is a global, free, and open-source email and productivity app, which has experienced significant growth in revenue, staff, and aspirations since its launch 20 years ago. Our revenue comes from our dedicated users around the world who generously fund our work. As we continue to expand our team and our product offerings, we remain dedicated to providing best-in-class productivity solutions independent of big tech. Operating as a small but dynamic team of 50 + staff across seven countries and time zones, we are part of the larger Mozilla family but maintain our distinct and independent identity from both the Mozilla Foundation and Mozilla Corporation.

Our organizational culture is driven by our mission. We are committed to fostering openness and transparency as a member of the open-source community. We lean into collaboration, creativity, and diversity. We bring a hearty dose of scrappy grit and resilience to our lively and spirited team. Our operating principles leverage data informed decisions, ownership, speed and efficiencies to elevate our work and deliver innovative and impactful solutions to our users.

The Opportunity:

We’re preparing to launch a global subscription service, introducing recurring revenue streams and significantly increasing the complexity of our financial operations, especially around revenue tracking, indirect tax compliance, and multi-jurisdictional reporting. To support this expansion, we’re seeking a proactive, detail-oriented Senior Accountant to lead core accounting processes, strengthen financial systems, and help scale operations for a global environment.

This is a high-impact role for someone who enjoys both hands-on accounting and building structure. You’ll work closely with our Finance & Accounting Specialist and report to the Managing Director, Operations, playing a key part in shaping the future of our finance function as we grow.

This is a remote, full time position. We require strong written and verbal communication skills to facilitate effective work coordination across various virtual communication platforms. This role works closely with staff across Canada, US, and Europe. Consequently, applicants in the Eastern/Central Standard time zones are strongly preferred.

What you’ll do:

General Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Lead monthly and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

  • Oversee accounts payable, employee reimbursements, and credit card expense review for accuracy and policy compliance.

  • Manage the relationship with our outsourced accounting provider to ensure alignment across systems and reporting.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and provide insights to support leadership decision-making.

Revenue & Tax Compliance

  • Ensure accurate accounting of revenue from global donation and subscription platforms (e.g. Stripe, PayPal, Paddle, Google Play).

  • Monitor and support compliance with global indirect tax obligations (e.g. U.S. sales tax, VAT, GST).

  • Coordinate tax registration, filing, and remittance activities across jurisdictions, working with external advisors and compliance tools.

  • Stay current on tax and financial regulations relevant to digital services and international operations.

Process Improvement & Scaling

  • Strengthen and document internal financial controls, policies, and procedures.

  • Support ongoing financial system improvements and integrations.

  • Collaborate with the Finance & Accounting Specialist to enhance budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes.

  • Assist in audit readiness, tax filings, and other compliance and reporting initiatives as the organization grows.

What you’ll bring:

  • 8+ years of accounting experience, ideally in a consumer-facing, international for-profit company (e.g., SaaS, mobile apps, or digital platforms) with exposure to global revenue and subscription models.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP rules and compliance requirements, with hands-on experience in month-end close, reconciliations, and general ledger management.

  • Familiarity with revenue accounting and indirect tax requirements for digital services (e.g., VAT, U.S. sales tax)

  • Experience managing relationships with external accountants, tax advisors, or compliance partners.

  • Proficient in cloud-based accounting software (preferably Sage Intacct) and reporting tools.

  • Comfortable working in a remote-first, globally distributed environment and collaborating across multiple teams and time zones.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; able to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders across functions.

  • A self-starter who thrives in a high-growth, entrepreneurial environment.

  • Open-minded and adaptable, with a “make it work” mindset and a focus on iterating systems and continuously improving processes.

Bonus points for:

  • CPA, CA, or equivalent certification is preferred but not required.

We benchmark our base salaries to local markets and target the 60th percentile of the peer market. The salary ranges for this role are:
