Product Manager - Data Engineering
Position Summary:
The Product Manager, Data Engineering, drives the roadmap and strategy for data engineering initiatives with an emphasis on enabling downstream enterprise software functionality (e.g. Salesforce, Marketo, ServiceNow and the like). Collaborating closely with data engineers, enterprise technology teams, product managers, and business stakeholders, they develop and optimize data warehouses, pipelines, and integrations to enable data consumers and data products. Leveraging experience in enterprise tools and data engineering, the Product Manager prioritizes and delivers impactful solutions through data-driven decision-making, experimentation, and user-focused design approaches to maximize value derived from data and enable decision-making across the org.
Essential Responsibilities:
Lead the strategy and roadmap for data engineering. This area enhances growth by enabling data consumers to gain insights from various data sources, visualizations, and reporting. Ensure tools like ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Marketo use enterprise data effectively. Improve time-to-value from new data sources by upgrading data warehousing, implementing governance best practices, and developing tools, processes, and documentation.
Apply design and product thinking to the data consumer experience and data engineering capabilities.
Collaborate deeply with business and engineering stakeholders across the org to plan the right product improvements at the right time to meet a demonstrated market or business need.
Own and manage the data engineering product backlog, prioritizing features, enhancements, and operational improvements that align with strategic objectives.
Communicate product strategy and collaborate with other teams to ensure they understand the strategy for efficient execution, aiming to enhance growth, speed-to-market, and business value.
Distill vision and strategy into an actionable, focused roadmap that bolts into business OKRs; Socialize and advocate for the roadmap.
Coordinate tactical execution, manage timelines, track deliverables, and ensure effective communication across data engineering and delivery teams.
Facilitate sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies specific to the data engineering team.
Stay informed of emerging trends in data engineering, data governance, and enterprise technology tools.
Guide trade-off decisions to maximize value.
Establish, track, and communicate progress toward outcomes using key performance indicators (KPIs) and OKRs
Demonstrate AI-first thinking
Ideal Skills, Experience, and Competencies:
At least three (3) years of product management experience in a technical domain, preferably in platform engineering, infrastructure, developer tooling, or an equivalent role
Experience with: big data warehouse design, big data databases (Redshift, BigQuery, Hive, Presto, etc.), orchestration frameworks (Airflow, Glue, etc.), data streaming (Kafka), and working knowledge of modern data engineering principles and practices
Experience building data infrastructure, services, processes, and advocating for their uses
Strong understanding of data consumer pain points across departments and disciplines
Scrupulous about value for the business; ability to understand and focus on what is most likely to bring ROI
Experience with Agile/Scrum Software Development along with project management tools (Trello, Jira, Rally or equivalent) in a technical software development environment
Experience prioritizing product backlogs and working closely with software engineers to write and refine stories for sprint execution
In-depth knowledge of software delivery process, developer analytics best practice and tools, and basic software and data architecture principles
Exceptional project management and interpersonal skills with experience managing multiple work streams across a variety of stakeholders
Ability to work with considerable autonomy and minimal guidance, with a bias to action
Proven ability to collaborate and problem-solve with diverse people in various parts of the organization
Ability to vet the work, ask insightful questions, and have attention to detail
Comfortable with ambiguity and can adapt to rapidly changing situations
Data-driven by nature with the ability to make and justify difficult decisions
Be deeply knowledgeable about the product area portfolio
Track record of defining and delivering groups of enhancements that drive outcomes
Expertise in using AI tools for product management and data engineering to improve skills, enhance work products, and drive outcomes
Required Education & Certifications:
B.A./B.S. in related field or equivalent work experience
Compensation:
Qualified candidates can expect a compensation range of $112,000 to $139,000 or more depending on experience.
