Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

Kraken Customer

What we do: build the most AI-driven, innovative, forward-thinking platform for energy management. From optimizing resources to delivering cost-effective, exceptional customer experiences through advanced Customer Information Systems (CIS), billing, meter data management, CRM, and AI-driven communications, Kraken is powering the next wave of innovation in the energy industry.

Why we do it: future energy will not look like energy as we know it today. We need to not just think about our future, but build for it. Now.

Our team

Our tech platform is already licensed to support over 50 million customer accounts in 17 countries, and we aim to serve 100 million globally by 2027.

Our technology team has grown extremely quickly as a result. With this rapid growth, we are looking for a proactive Localisation Expert to join the Markets team and work with our developers to ensure what they do has the highest impact for our customers as we plan our expansion to new regions and types of clients.

The Markets group owns the components of Kraken which need to be configured based on the particularities of a given market, which include broad understanding of the regulatory environment, relevant spoken and written languages, the finer details of how to operate in the electricity, gas, and other utility industries in any/all countries we’re present. This is a complex and technical area, with a high degree of regulatory compliance required in each market.

The Role

You’ll be joining as a Localisation Expert in the Markets group focused on improving and running a playbook to help guide various engineering and product teams to understand what updates and additional work will be needed to have Kraken perform best in a new region.

This role will be responsible for engaging with internal knowledge experts who may be able to provide this information, liaise with external consultants and clients themselves who may be able to guide the teams, run training sessions for mission and delivery teams who will be operating in a new market, and ultimately be responsible for compiling and distributing these collected details about a new market to all the interested stakeholders.

Applicants will be expected to be comfortable with travel and likely operating in multiple languages. The role will include significant written and verbal communication to both successfully collect disparate pieces of information about a market, as well as to cleanly compile and distribute this information to internal teams in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Tagg Jefferson, the VP of Markets, to establish new market priorities and understanding of when new discovery efforts need to occur

  • Develop a clear and repeatable playbook, in collaboration with all relevant technical and delivery teams, for what information needs to be gathered about a particular market

  • Become a central point of contact for all localisation-related questions and ensure that discovery of information about a given market is simple and easy

  • Work asynchronously with international teams across the globe

Your day to day will look like:

  • Understand from Sales and Business Development teams where our next counties or markets will be, and if any priorities have shifted

  • Refine any questions that a given product group or team will need to have answered for their respective product to work in the new market (e.g. tax codes, interval of measurement from a smart meter, regionally-specific dunning requirements, etc.)

  • Step through a generalised playbook or checklist to gather information related to those questions utilizing internal regulatory teams, external consultants or subject matter experts, or individual research

  • Schedule and coordinate training sessions related to new markets with relevant teams

  • Opine on high level considerations related to the level of effort required to engage with a new market

What we're looking for:

  • We’re looking for people with a variety of skills and experience to build our team, so if you fit some (and not all) of the criteria, please do apply.

  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, comfortable engaging with varied technical expertise levels and international teams.

  • Proactive, self-starter with a methodical, highly organised approach to managing projects from inception to completion.

  • Ability to prioritise tasks effectively, aligning with team goals and strategic direction.

  • Adaptable and thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment (start-up/scale-up experience is advantageous).

  • Experience of how to (and how not to!) explore and localise software to new markets.

  • Knowledge of the energy industry or experience with smart/non-smart meters, meter data, and meter operators is a plus.

  • Experience with technical documentation like data format guidelines, process diagrams, and energy regulation is beneficial.

Why you'll love it here:

  • Our company culture - We are an organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, on Glassdoor we were voted 50 best places to work in 2022.

  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options including FSAs.

  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need.

  • 401(k) plan with employer match.

  • Parental leave. Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible.

  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.

  • Flexible working environment - genuine work life balance here, we are in the top 5 companies in the UK, we treat you as a human, and do our best to make work and life merge smoothly together

  • Equity Options Scheme - you own your own part of the business, share options in the whole Octopus Energy Group so we all work together towards success

  • Salary - the band for this role ranges between $180k-$220k per year (with some flexibility) depending on relevant experience, role alignment, and expertise demonstrated throughout the interview process. While the broad salary range is listed, not all candidates will be placed at the top of the range—this will be determined by the overall fit for the position. If you have questions about this, just ask! Our recruiters are happy to provide more context.

  • Office - have a certain tech requirement? We’ll do our best to get it. We also have drinks, snacks and a coffee machine at our office spaces.

  • Your development is important - we support and help with development including internal and external courses, learning, study support etc, all bespoke to you.

Why Join Us:

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of our expansion, playing a key role in getting a growing and dynamic product into regions where it can serve even more clients and energy users. You will have the chance to shape the future of our platform and make a significant impact on our growth and success. If you are a proactive individual with a passion for tackling complex challenges and driving innovation around a core mission of clean energy, we would love to hear from you.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Are you ready for a career with us? We want to ensure you have all the tools and environment you need to unleash your potential. Need any specific accommodations? Whether you require specific accommodations or have a unique preference, let us know, and we'll do what we can to customise your interview process for comfort and maximum magic!

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
