Principal TLM, Query Infrastructure
About the Team
Mixpanel is a cloud application deployed on Google’s Cloud Platform. It is powered by an in-house database called Arb, which is built for ingesting, storing, and querying trillions of events in real time, at interactive latencies. (Read more about the core primitives of Arb.)
The query team at Mixpanel is responsible for building & maintaining the next generation of Mixpanel’s query infrastructure. This includes designing & building fundamental query primitives that unlock more nuanced analysis; improving query planning, scheduling & multi tenant resource allocation; identifying & eliminating horizontal scaling bottlenecks; & ensuring we meet performance & uptime SLAs.
We’re a fairly tenured team (average time at Mixpanel is 4 years). We work in terms of structured 6-8 week long sprints with clear goals that are interspersed with less structured periods consisting of short-term wins, bug bashes, free form exploration, prototyping, & planning exercises. We encourage and expect all team members to provide input to prioritization in terms of written proposals, which is complemented with centralized prioritization. We value simplicity, reduced operational overhead & re-usable primitives in our solutions.
About the Role
As an engineering manager, you would help scale the team’s impact with hiring, culture and focus. You’ll be responsible for streamlining execution and prioritization based on a clear understanding of our technical systems and associated business goals.
Responsibilities
Hiring and retaining diverse and talented engineers
Mentoring engineers & growing future technical leaders
Working cross-functionally to translate business goals into the team’s roadmap
Nurturing engineering excellence via culture and process
Providing meaningful input to technical designs based on an in depth understanding of our systems & services
Ensuring the query service uptime and performance SLO/SLAs are met
Working with customers to improve their query performance.
We're Looking For Someone Who Has
Has prior experience building, maintaining & scaling reliable, high-volume distributed systems.
Can reason about ambiguous problems from first principles and propose creative solutions
Has strong CS fundamentals (e.g., data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems)
Contributes to attracting and retaining engineers through technical leadership, collaboration, and/or enablement
Has a track record of mentoring and growing engineers who work with you. You make engineers around you more productive.
Bonus Points For
Prior engineering management experience, especially on teams that build and operate high volume, stateful distributed systems in SaaS environments
Prior Experience with database technologies, including their internal design and implementation.
Prior Experience with multi-tenant systems, with focus on reliability, performance, isolation and security.
