The Opportunity

The Principal Interoperability Engineer will serve as the Interoperability SME and contribute to the strategic vision while leading the design, technical execution and delivery of healthcare interoperability initiatives.  This role is pivotal in enabling secure, standards-based data exchange across EHRs, health information networks, payers, and third-party systems, supporting our mission to improve patient outcomes and become the most connected CGM in the market. #software

What You'll Do:

Strategic Leadership 

  • Collaborate with marketing and commercial to contribute and drive the healthcare interoperability roadmap aligned with organizational goals. 

  • Collaborate with clinical, product, and engineering teams to identify and prioritize integration opportunities. 

  • Represent the organization in industry groups and standards bodies (e.g., HL7, iCode, Argonaut, IHE) as needed. 

Architecture & Design 

  • Design scalable, secure, and standards-compliant interoperability frameworks. 

  • Develop and enforce architectural best practices for clinical and administrative data exchange. 

  • Facilitate and lead detailed HL7 v2, HL7 CCD/CDA and FHIR interface mapping for use case scenarios. 

  • Author technical specifications. 

Technical Execution 

  • Lead the development and deployment of APIs, data pipelines, and integration services for real-time and batch data exchange. 

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, 21st Century Cures Act, and other healthcare data privacy and security regulations. 

  • Provide hands-on support for complex integration challenges and guide teams through technical decision-making. 

People Management 

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers focused on interoperability and integration. 

  • Provide regular coaching, performance feedback, and career development support. 

  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture. 

  • Manage team capacity, hiring, and resource planning in alignment with project goals. 

Collaboration & Enablement 

  • Partner with EHR vendors, health systems, payers, and third-party developers to ensure seamless data interoperability. 

  • Support internal teams with technical documentation, training, and onboarding for interoperability tools. 

  • Monitor and optimize system performance, reliability, and data quality across integrations. 

 

Critical Success Indicators 

  • Successfully built and commercialized multiple EHR Interoperability solutions and services from concept thru launch using agile processes in both consumer tech and med tech. 

  • Successfully defined a scalable and extensible technical strategy with clear delineation between internal and external contributions. 

  • Demonstrated experience in creating solutions that seamlessly fit into customer and patient desired workflows. 

 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field or equivalent work experience 

  • 8+ years product development experience in engineering or science 

  • Extensive experience of contemporary design control and risk management practices. 

  • Strong knowledge of defined development process that is consistent with ISO, FDA design control standards or requirements. 

  • In depth understanding of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems (e.g. Epic,  Cerner), interoperability standards (e.g. HL7v2, CCDA, FHIR) and frameworks (e.g. SMART on FHIR, IHE) 

  • Experience in developing and deploying EHR Interoperability solutions and services 

  • Experience with integration engines, their capabilities and sending and receiving different types of HL7 messages via HTTP(s) and TCP/IP 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • HL7 certified in one or more standards:  V2, CDA, FHIR 

  • Certified by one or more middleware solutions: Rhapsody, Intersystems, Corepoint, Mirth, etc. 

  • Experience working with large complex integrated delivery network deployment of an EHR such as Cerner, EPIC or equivalent EHR systems 

  • Familiarity with multiple, diverse technical integrations, technologies, and processing environments 

  • Experience with configuring and troubleshooting high volume HL7 data interfaces including ADT, Lab, Pharmacy and other clinical/financial/administrative functions. 

  • Deep understanding of clinical codesets and libraries such as SNOMED, LOINC, ICD, etc. 

  • Ability to research API specs, such as Swagger, to understand and evaluate API availability and data responses for current needs and future growth 

  • Experience developing regulated medical device software that strictly adheres to design controls and quality management system requirements 

  • Significant experience working with agile software development methods, such as scrum and Kanban and exposure to working within CI/CD pipelines. 

  • Ability to work effectively across multiple departments, countries, and time zones 

  • Self-motivated to complete tasks timely with competence; driven to self-educate and improve processes 

  • Excellent technical, troubleshooting & mentoring skills 

  • Experience developing healthcare SaaS solutions, integrating with APIs, and working with cloud service providers
