The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring a UK Policy Advocate to advise the UK government on its forthcoming AI bill. This experienced and connected policy professional will also make recommendations for how the UK can utilise its unique position on the global stage to limit risks from AGI. The UK Policy Advocate will report to our Head of European Policy and Research.

FLI educates and engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the general public about transformative technologies and their implications. In doing so, it advises and advocates on the necessary steps to avoid catastrophic risks while bringing about positive futures for all. 

As UK Policy Advocate, you will:

1) Build awareness among key stakeholders about the fundamentals of AI safety as well as the benefits of putting clear safeguards in place.

2) Support the UK's domestic regulation of AI

- Identify key groups and stakeholders involved in shaping the forthcoming AI bill and build trusting relationships with these groups.

- Develop a political strategy to engage senior government stakeholders.

3) Further the role of the UK in shaping global governance of AI

- Identify key stakeholders with international-facing roles at UK AISI, FCDO or other relevant government departments.

- Liaise with these contacts to advance global limits on dangerous AI development and co-shape the conditions for meaningful multilateral negotiations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Eligibility to work in the UK, either based in London (preference) or able to travel to London regularly.

  • Experience in UK politics/policy or understanding of how policies are passed in the UK government. 

Skills and qualities required:

  • Sharp strategic planner, who can anticipate the likely risks and outcomes of multi-stage projects.

  • Strong autonomy, pro-activity, and work ethic with ability to work independently on solo projects over extended periods.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability communicate complex information to non-expert audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trusting partnerships.

Preferred qualifications, skills and qualities:

  • An existing network within at least one major UK political party, UK AISI, FCDO and/or DSIT.

  • Understanding of the technical capabilities and limitations of AI systems.

£95,000 - £135,000 a year

Exact compensation will vary depending on experience and geography.

This position will be hired on a 12-month consulting contract.

FLI is a largely virtual organisation, with a team of >25 distributed internationally, mostly in Europe and the US. We have four offices: Campbell in California, Brussels in Belgium, London in the UK, and Washington DC.
