Apply for this position

An overview of this role

We are seeking an Intermediate Frontend Engineer to join our AI Powered:Workflow Catalog team. The Workflow Catalog team forwards GitLab's AI initiatives, building the platform that will allow users to discover, browse, and deploy AI agents, workflows, and tools. We operate with a startup mentality within GitLab; moving fast, failing fast, and iterating rapidly to compete in the AI landscape.

As an Intermediate Frontend Engineer on the Workflow Catalog team, you'll help create the user interface for GitLab's AI discovery platform. You'll work with AI technologies while building intuitive experiences that make AI workflows accessible to both technical and non-technical users. This is an opportunity to help shape AI tooling at GitLab while working with a team of experienced engineers.

Some key challenges you'll help solve include:

  • Building a catalog interface for AI agents, workflows, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) components

  • Creating reusable catalog components that work across different AI tool types without requiring users to understand complex YAML configurations

  • Implementing discovery and browsing experiences that compete with other AI platforms

  • Integrating with backend services including Workflow Service and AI Gateway

  • Balancing rapid prototyping with maintainable, scalable architecture

What You'll Do

  • Develop features and improvements to the GitLab product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way using Vue.js and GraphQL

  • Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders (Backend, UX, etc.) to iterate on new features within the GitLab product

  • Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review

  • Build responsive and accessible components that deliver an excellent user experience across devices and user needs

  • Consistently ship features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects

  • Work closely with UX designers to implement intuitive and effective user interfaces

  • Learn, collaborate and teach other Frontend Engineers. Everyone can contribute something new to the team regardless of how long they've been in the industry

  • Participate actively in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to enhance code quality

  • Help improve our test coverage and system reliability through thoughtful testing practices

  • Contribute to troubleshooting and resolving technical issues as they arise

  • Support technical documentation and internal knowledge sharing initiatives

What You'll Bring

  • Professional experience with Vue.js or another modern JavaScript web framework (React, Angular, etc.), and GraphQL for API integration and data management

  • Solid understanding of semantic HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript concepts

  • Experience writing automated tests (Jest, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape) including frontend unit and acceptance tests

  • Experience using Git in a professional/workplace environment and familiarity with code review processes

  • Understanding of responsive design principles and accessibility standards

  • Solid understanding of core web and browser concepts (how browsers parse and construct web pages)

  • Experience with performance optimization problems and demonstrated ability to diagnose and prevent these issues

  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment

  • Effective communication skills with ability to regularly achieve consensus with peers and provide clear status updates

  • Comfort working in a highly agile, iterative software development process

  • Self-motivated and self-managing with strong organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with other parts of the organization

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a remote environment

  • Positive and solution-oriented mindset

  • Ownership mentality. Take responsibility for your work and follow through–whether that’s shipping a feature, fixing a bug, or improving a test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AI/ML products or strong interest in artificial intelligence applications

  • Familiarity with Python (for collaboration with Workflow Service team)

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails (GitLab's backend stack)

  • Knowledge of design systems and component libraries

  • Previous experience with catalog, marketplace, or discovery platform interfaces

  • Understanding of microservice architectures and complex system integrations

  • Experience working in startup environments or fast-moving product teams

  • Computer science education or equivalent experience

  • Open source contributions

About the team

You'll be joining a team of 8-9 frontend and backend engineers spanning APAC and EMEA timezones. The Workflow Catalog team works closely with the Duo Workflow team, Design System team, and other AI-focused teams at GitLab.

Our team operates with a unique approach within GitLab:

  • 2-week iteration cycles with occasional one-week breaks

  • Unit-based collaboration where 2-3 engineers work closely together on features

  • Cross-timezone collaboration with weekly meetings split between APAC and EMEA

  • Startup mentality with bias for action and acceptance of calculated risks

The team's mission is to:

  • Create a platform for AI workflow discovery and deployment at GitLab

  • Enable both technical and non-technical users to find and use AI tools

  • Build catalog architecture that can scale across different AI tool types

  • Help establish GitLab as a strong player in AI workflow management

As an Intermediate Frontend Engineer, you'll be joining a new team working on a greenfield area of the product. You'll have the opportunity to help shape the user experience of GitLab's AI platform from the ground up. This role offers growth opportunities in the AI space while contributing to a product that will impact how developers and organizations adopt AI workflows.

How GitLab will support you

  • Benefits to support your health, finances, and well-being

  • All remote, asynchronous work environment

  • Flexible Paid Time Off

  • Team Member Resource Groups

  • Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan

  • Growth and development budget

  • Parental leave

  • Home office support

Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiters to assess your application.
