Job Description

NEC Software Solutions are looking for dynamic and enthusiastic Head of Development to manage a portfolio of key development streams for the NEC Health business.

You will make a major contribution to the design, development and support of complex, clinician critical applications which play a vital part in servicing the Health sector day-to-day across the UK and international markets.

You will work pro-actively with mixed onshore and offshore teams to ensure that software products are built and maintained to the highest possible quality standards and in accordance with the agreed technical architecture and specification.

This is a rewarding and challenging role for an experienced Head of Development who wants to play a major part in the development of solutions that impact the lives of millions.

Responsibilities:

  • Management of multiple NEC Health software development teams, with primary responsibility for ensuring that all software solutions are designed, developed and delivered to agreed quality standards within agreed timeframes and costs.

  • Be an active member of a wider Senior Development Management Team; contributing to team objectives, cross team working and process optimisation.

  • Providing leadership and line management to a number of Development Managers, of both onshore and offshore software development teams, ensuring that collectively and individually they are performing and delivering to the required standards.

  • Work closely with the Head of Technology to follow and implement guidance for common product approaches for areas such as AI, internationalisation, multi tenancy, cloud adoption, security and business intelligence.

  • Ensure that the development teams are effectively structured to achieve the goals and objectives of the NEC business. Ensure that the roles and responsibilities of all team members are defined and clearly understood.

  • Work closely with senior product colleagues to ensure that capacity planning and roadmap content is achievable for each product in the portfolio based on the assigned budget.

  • Working with the appropriate senior business leaders to ensure that the developed software solutions fully meet the needs of the client and the expectations of the revenue and order book forecasts.

  • Working closely with central security teams to ensure the product designs meet the required security specifications.

  • Build relationships with NEC colleagues to ensure that, where appropriate, our products are capable of being joined up at both business process and technological levels

  • Ensure that all development work conforms to the agreed NEC quality processes and standards and that software is designed, built and delivered to the highest level.

  • Actively identify opportunities for process improvement and implement accordingly in conjunction with appropriate stakeholders.

  • Ensure that all software developed conforms to the appropriate technical and design standards including any such standards defined by the NEC Solutions Architects.

  • Production and management of the overall software resource and delivery plan.

  • Ensure that the software development teams are adequately and efficiently utilised at all times.

  • Production of accurate and timely development progress reports as requested.

  • Proactively participate in technical risk mitigation and issue resolution as required.

  • Advising the Development Director of any deviations from plan, recommending corrective action and helping prepare any appropriate recovery initiatives.

  • Working closely with Senior Management to ensure budgets and delivery timescales are met.

  • Liaising with customers and other key stakeholders as required.

  • Be prepared to travel inland and overseas as and where needs demand.

Qualifications

Essential experience & skills:

  • Proven experience of successfully managing multiple complex software development teams of 50+ developers through the entire development life cycle - from initial requirements capture through design, development and testing to customer delivery.

  • Proven experience of working with formal Agile software development methodologies including Scrum and Kanban.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage distributed teams, including onshore and offshore developers.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.

  • An ability to represent NEC professionally in client facing situations and to act in their best interests.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • The ability to lead and motivate a management team to deliver high levels of performance at all times, dealing with any issues promptly and effectively as they arise.

  • An ability to work effectively with limited direct supervision.

  • An ability to articulate solutions at all levels and to communicate both technical and non-technical information, depending upon the audience.

  • Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to interact effectively with internal onshore/offshore colleagues and customers at all levels.

  • Able to demonstrate a dynamic and enthusiastic approach to software development with a focus on quality and continuous improvement.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent, ideally in a technology or managerial related subject.
