An overview of this role
The Engineering Manager specializes in the management of people, with a specific focus on Software Supply Chain Security. This role will lead a team building features within the Software Supply Chain Security stage, primarily focused on CI job artifact security as expressed via the SLSA compliance framework. Engineering Managers at GitLab see their team as their product. While they are technically credible and know the details of what engineers work on, their time is spent safeguarding their team's health, hiring a world-class team, and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. They must also coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals.
This role is an extension of the Engineering Manager position.
What You’ll Do
Lead a team focused on developing features for Software Supply Chain Security, with a primary focus on CI job artifact security
Guide the implementation of SLSA compliance framework into GitLab CI/CD pipeline features
Collaborate with Product Managers to define and prioritize the roadmap for Supply Chain Security features
Stay current with industry standards and best practices in software supply chain security, particularly SLSA, SBOM, and vulnerability management
Partner with Security team members to ensure features meet the highest security standards
Educate and advocate for supply chain security best practices across GitLab
Represent GitLab in industry forums related to software supply chain security when appropriate
What You’ll Bring
Experience with software supply chain security concepts and tools
Understanding of the SLSA (Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts) framework and its application in CI/CD pipelines
Familiarity with software artifact provenance, attestation, and verification techniques
Knowledge of secure software development practices
Experience with CI/CD systems and their security considerations
Understanding of container security concepts
Familiarity with software composition analysis and vulnerability management
Experience implementing SLSA compliance in production environments is ideal, but not required
Performance Indicators
In addition to the standard Engineering Manager performance indicators, this role will also be measured on:
Successful implementation of SLSA framework components into GitLab CI/CD
Adoption rate of supply chain security features by GitLab users
Reduction in security vulnerabilities related to CI job artifacts
Team velocity on supply chain security feature development
Integration completeness with other GitLab security features
Community engagement around GitLab's supply chain security capabilities
Documentation quality for supply chain security features

The Pipeline Security team is responsible for making CI pipelines more secure and trustworthy for users. We're currently focused on two major initiatives that will significantly improve GitLab's security posture: developing a native secrets management system and implementing SLSA L3 compliance features. Our work directly impacts the security of thousands of organizations' software supply chains.
