Engineering Manager - Growth: Personalization Platform

An overview of this role

As an Engineering Manager on the Personalization Platform team, you'll be leading architecture and building the systems that empower our  feature teams to run their own A/B tests, gather analytics, and implement personalized experiences for GitLab users. You'll work at the intersection of data, experimentation, and product development. You‘ll have the opportunity to lead a team of talented engineers pushing a core part of GitLab to the forefront of our industry. You will have your engineers’ well-being as top priority as you create the conditions for a world-class team delivering impactful results for our customers. You will collaborate with counterparts to establish predictable delivery of Product outcomes and dig into your technical expertise around git and software engineering to drive technical strategy while mentoring your engineers through their careers. All while continuing to seek opportunities to enhance productivity and efficiency of the team’s efforts. As necessary, you’ll drive hiring efforts to capture top-tier talent shaping the team to better support the company’s objectives and goals.

What you’ll do  

  • Manage team activities and ensure project delivery.

  • Support engineers' professional growth and skill development.

  • Create detailed project plans for epics.

  • Execute agile project management processes.

  • Foster empathy and address team concerns.

  • Recruit globally-distributed talent and conduct interviews.

  • Cultivate a psychologically safe team environment.

  • Implement process improvements to boost productivity.

  • Conduct regular 1:1 meetings and provide feedback.

  • Implement scalable infrastructure for experimentation and personalization across GitLab's platform.

  • Build intuitive tools that enable product teams to design, deploy, and analyze their own A/B tests without engineering bottlenecks.

  • Collaborate with the data analytics team to implement statistical methodologies for accurate experiment evaluation.

  • Create documentation and training resources to help teams effectively utilize the platform.

  • Partner with product teams to understand their experimentation needs and continuously improve the platform.

What you’ll bring 

  • Proficiency in using GitLab for project management and collaboration.

  • Advanced knowledge of git beyond the basic usage.

  • Strong negotiation skills to achieve consensus across departments.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with current technical competency.

  • In-depth technical expertise in at least one core language, framework, or technology (Ruby / Go).

  • Familiarity with various functional areas within the team's domain.

  • Additional experience relevant to the role's specialty.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Alignment with organizational values and principles.

  • Experience building internal tools or platforms for experimentation, analytics, or personalization.

  • Familiarity with A/B testing methodologies and statistical analysis.

  • Experience with event tracking, data pipelines, and analytics systems.

  • Experience with feature flagging systems and progressive rollouts.

About the team

You'll be joining GitLab's Growth Engineering team during an exciting transformation as we build out our new Personalization Platform. Our team is focused on re-investing in GitLab's product-led growth motion by creating self-service capabilities that help customers discover, try, and adopt our products with minimal friction. We're tackling key challenges like improving our analytics infrastructure, enhancing trial experiences across deployments, and building a robust personalization stack that will allow feature teams to run their own experiments. As part of our FY26 strategy, we're organizing into focused sub-teams around Conversion, Adoption, and Personalization Platform, with this role specifically supporting the platform that will empower teams across GitLab to make data-driven decisions. We're a collaborative group working closely with stakeholders from Marketing, Sales, Developer Relations, and Product teams to drive measurable business outcomes while maintaining GitLab's commitment to an excellent customer experience.
