The Director of Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting will be responsible for managing HubSpot’s accounting policies, procedures, and positions on a range of technical accounting topics, including the implementation and compliance with new accounting standards.  This will include maintaining an inventory of position papers and working with the business and accounting team to ensure continued compliance with accounting policies and also ensure that changes to the business that impact our accounting are addressed timely.  Furthermore, the role will include a need for research and development of new accounting positions based on new transactions encountered by the organization.  

This role will also be responsible for the Company’s compliance with financial reporting requirements, including SEC filings and statutory audit financial statement requirements.  The role will facilitate the education and training of the accounting team and broader Finance organization on technical accounting matters.  In addition, the role will also include an aspect of supporting the design of relevant SOX controls and ensuring the accounting team executes upon its relevant controls.  

The role will lead a team of three and will have significant interaction with the business, members of the accounting, Legal, and FP&A teams, executive leadership, and the Audit Committee.  

 In this role, you will get to:

  • Develop financial policies in response to operational changes, technical accounting, and internal control requirements

  • Maintain and  as necessary technical accounting position memos that currently exist and document new position memos as new transactions or accounting pronouncements arise

  • Work with various members of the accounting team to ensure that technical accounting requirements are being followed as part of the monthly close

  • Oversee and review the SEC reporting process, including a detailed review of SEC financial statements and disclosures and various statutory audit filings

  • Oversee and review the accounting for leases, stock-based compensation, strategic investments, debt, intangibles, and goodwill including impairment testing

  • Collaborate with the revenue team on the accounting for complex revenue transactions and ensure appropriate compliance with ASC 606

  • Provide guidance on technical accounting for complex transactions including mergers and acquisitions and own the purchase price allocation and intangibles valuation process

  • Facilitate team education and training on various technical accounting matters

  • Support the design of relevant SOX controls and the execution of these controls by the accounting team

  • Present on relevant technical accounting matters to executive management and the Audit Committee

  • Manage the Disclosure Committee review process

  • Proactively manage the career goals and growth opportunities of a team of 3 individuals

We are looking for people who:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and a CPA 

  • Have approximately 6-8 years of public accounting experience, with 2-3 years as a manager, ideally in the technology industry 

  • Have 2-3 years experience in industry/corporate accounting 

  • Have a strong technical accounting background with a thorough knowledge of US GAAP, FASB codification and SEC reporting standards, as well as experience with technical research and preparation of accounting memos

  • Have experience in SOX, including design of controls and executing and documenting control testing

  • Have the ability to clearly and concisely document and effectively communicate complex accounting and reporting issues to finance and non-finance personnel 

  • Have strong technology and computer skills 

  • Are self-directed, willing to “roll-up sleeves” and execute tasks

  • Have the ability to work well with others

  • Embrace the challenges of maintaining technical accounting and financial reporting in a very fast-paced environment

The cash compensation above includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles.
