Who are we?

The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services company on a mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. For 30 years we’ve been helping people make better investment decisions through transparency, education, and Foolish fun. We’re a fast-moving, collaborative team that values high-quality work, curiosity, and initiative. We care deeply about what we do, and we’re driven by the impact our work has on real people’s financial futures.

What does this team do?

The Fool is a place where a lot of fun and a lot of work happen quickly. Our Legal team helps us innovate while adhering to the laws and regulations that may affect all of the work and fun we do. We look to our lawyers to help us avoid fiascos, like [redacted] or [also redacted,] but we especially want them to help us create great services for our members and the world.

What would you do in this role?

We’re looking for a strategic and entrepreneurial attorney to help guide The Motley Fool’s approach to artificial intelligence, consumer data, and the future of financial advice. This is a high-impact role that will partner closely with senior leaders in product,  technology , compliance, and marketing to help ensure our use of AI is bold, responsible, and forward-looking.

As an Associate General Counsel focused on technology and innovation, you’ll serve as the primary legal advisor on AI initiatives and emerging regulatory developments — helping us deliver trusted, tech-forward financial guidance while mitigating risk.

No two days will look the same, but here’s a glimpse of what you’ll tackle:

  • Advise on the development and governance of AI tools and models, especially those involving personalized financial advice or consumer data.

  • Build scalable, lightweight compliance programs aligned with regulatory frameworks from the SEC, CFPB, FTC, and global authorities.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate legal insights into product development, marketing, and   technology roadmaps.

  • Draft, negotiate, and review commercial agreements, including SaaS and vendor contracts related to a variety of matters including AI and data services.

  • Collaborate with specialists and colleagues in privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property, and compliance to support strategic initiatives.

  • Engage with outside counsel on complex or specialized legal issues.

  • Review marketing campaigns and materials for regulatory compliance, substantiation, and disclosures.

  • Support trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters as part of our IP strategy.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends, legal risks, and regulatory shifts — and educate internal stakeholders accordingly.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of legal experience, ideally with a mix of fintech, AI/tech law, or financial services exposure.

  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. regulatory frameworks around AI innovation, as well as data privacy and/or consumer protection, ideally, but not exclusively, in relation to investment advice.

  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex legal issues across technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong judgment, proactive mindset, and collaborative spirit.

  • J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.

It’s even better if you have:

  • In-house experience in a fintech, AI company, investment platform, or at a firm serving those industries.

  • Experience developing or advising on compliance programs in fast-paced or emerging tech environments.

  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, algorithmic accountability, or model transparency practices.

  • Experience advising on SEC, CFPB, FINRA, or international regulatory regimes.

  • Comfort with drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.

  • Exposure to cybersecurity, data protection laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA, GDPR), and third-party risk management.

  • A strong external network of legal, regulatory, or policy experts.

Please note, no sponsorship is available for this position. You must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, one of these states for employment: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.

Below you’ll see a few of our perks, but check out our Careers Site for the complete list:

  • Flexible, remote work environment (*see our open states above)

  • No “vacation policy” (not to be confused with a “No vacation” policy)

  • Comprehensive compensation package, including company equity
