Senior Web developer

About Brave

Brave is on a mission to protect the human right to privacy online. We’ve built a free web browser that blocks creepy ads and trackers by default, a private search engine with a truly independent index, a browser-native crypto wallet, and a private ad network (opt-in!) that directly rewards you for your attention. And we’re just getting started. Already 100 million people have switched to Brave for a faster, more private web. Millions more switch every month.

The internet is a sea of ads, hackers, and echo chambers. Big Tech makes huge profits off our data, and tells us what’s true and what’s not. Brave is fighting back. Join us!

Summary

Brave is looking for a Senior Web Developer to help to build and maintain various web properties across the organization, with a primary focus on brave.com. In this role, you will work closely with many teams across the organization, but especially our Product, Design, Marketing, and Growth teams. In addition to your primary responsibilities, you may be called upon to assist other teams as well with your expertise, so you should be comfortable with rapid context switching.

We primarily focus on frontend technologies, and our stack includes (not necessarily all within the same project) vanilla JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Hugo, Tailwind, Svelte, and SvelteKit.

We operate in a remote, geographically-distributed work environment.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of experience building websites professionally

  • Expertise in semantic/idiomatic HTML, CSS, JavaScript

  • Strong knowledge of various rendering strategies and when to use them

  • Strong knowledge of CSS strategies/methodologies at scale

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

  • A general understanding of SEO practices, and analytics tools such as Matomo (Piwik)

  • Experience building fully responsive websites across multiple devices/platforms

  • Understanding of general and frontend web security considerations

  • Experience working with a frontend framework/library such as React, Vue, Angular, or Svelte

Nice-to-have

  • Basic understanding of Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools

  • Understanding of CDNs

  • Experience deploying and managing AWS services and web apps

  • Experience writing GitHub actions

  • Experience developing websites/applications that are localized across many languages

  • Experience with A/B testing

  • Experience using Figma

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with Product, Growth, and Marketing teams to determine requirements for landing pages and web assets for new initiatives.

  • Build high quality landing pages, and all other customer-facing web assets, driven by Product, Growth, and Marketing teams.

  • Maintain/expand existing websites and web applications, and continuously improve them to a high engineering standard.

  • Effectively translate designs into fully responsive and performant pages or apps, while collaborating with designers to arrive at the ideal balance of aesthetics and performance.

  • Rapidly develop prototypes and experiments under tight deadlines.

  • Ensure high-performance and availability.

  • Maintain a high security standard.

  • Set up and maintain redirects.

  • Work collaboratively with geographically-distributed team members.

Working at Brave

  • Industry-leader in privacy, with a research and engineering team that’s innovating everyday to keep people safer online and beat Big Tech

  • Highly competitive salaries & benefits, and generous home-office stipends

  • Fully remote team (no office, no commute)

  • Welcoming, humble, ridiculously smart teammates, and a truly flat org structure

  • Opportunity to get in early at a hyper-growth company, and revolutionize the web

  • Oh, and did we mention Brendan, our CEO & co-founder, invented JavaScript?

United States Candidates: The salary range for this role is $120,000 - $150,00 depending on experience.
