Description

We’re seeking a strategic, hands-on Senior Product Owner to lead the PL Specialty portfolio and shape the platform services that power our Specialty product offerings across the Safeco and Liberty Mutual brands. This is a highly visible role reporting to the Director, Product Owner — Personal Lines (PL) Property & Specialty and will lead a group of Product Owners working with agile squads. You will translate business vision into scalable, compliant, and performant platform solutions (quoting, rating, underwriting, vendor data, policy output, customer data, UI, claims integrations and more) that other product teams can easily consume. If you enjoy operating at the intersection of business and technology, driving product strategy across teams, and delivering measurable business outcomes, this role offers the opportunity to have enterprise-level impact.

What you’ll do

  • Own the PL Specialty platform portfolio: define and communicate an ambitious, clear strategy and translate it into feature strategies and roadmaps.

  • Lead and develop a team of Product Owners who support agile squads and deliver shared services consumed across the organization.

  • Manage the portfolio backlog—groom, prioritize, and refine work in a highly matrixed environment with strong stakeholder input.

  • Set and drive portfolio-level KPIs and quality standards for delivery (scalability, compliance, performance, usability).

  • Collaborate closely with IT and Business leadership to align roadmaps, secure resources, and drive modernization initiatives.

  • Build strong cross-functional relationships with Distribution, Underwriting, Pricing, Claims, UI/UX, Vendor Data teams and other stakeholders to ensure solutions meet business needs.

  • Conduct feasibility and cost/benefit analysis to support investment decisions and optimize economic outcomes.

  • Ensure appropriate controls, processes, and business procedures are in place for shared services owned by the portfolio.

Why this role matters / opportunities

  • Lead a visible platform that powers multiple brands and product lines.

  • Influence enterprise modernization and shape technical and business strategy.

  • Mentor and grow Product Owners and collaborate with senior leaders across the company.

  • Deliver solutions with direct impact on customer experience, underwriting effectiveness, and operational efficiency.

Ideal candidate will have

  • Proven leadership experience in a complex, matrixed environment, including direct people management of Product Owners or similar roles.

  • Deep familiarity with insurance product ecosystems (quoting, rating, underwriting rules, policy administration, pricing, vendor data) or similarly complex regulated product domains.

  • Strong experience working with agile squads and modern product delivery practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to own a portfolio backlog, prioritize across competing stakeholders, and deliver against KPIs.

  • Strategic mindset with hands-on execution capability: can translate business vision into roadmaps, epics, and well-defined features.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills; comfortable presenting strategy and trade-offs to senior leadership.

  • Experience partnering with engineering/IT to deliver scalable, compliant, and performant platforms.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, technology, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Advanced certifications in product management, agile, or related disciplines (CSPO, SAFe, Pragmatic Institute, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Agile development methodologies as typically acquired through a Bachelors’ degree in relevant field (business, computer science, etc.) and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in business, engineering, technology and/or consulting. Master’s degree preferred.

  • High level of proven business expertise needed to set clear priorities for product and understand business value impacts.

  • Technical proficiency required to oversee quarterly & sprint planning and to have an informed, independent voice.

  • Strong influencing skills to be seen as the decision maker when interfacing with business, and willingness to dissent with both teams and business.

  • Ability to influence a diverse group of stakeholders through strong leadership skills

  • Ability to coach and inspire both direct reports and matrixed teams.

  • Comfortable with making decisions with some level of uncertainty in a fast-paced working environment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to convey information clearly and concisely
